Why We Chose Munnar for Our Honeymoon

As newlyweds embarking on our first trip together, we yearned for a destination that promised tranquility, scenic landscapes, and a unique cultural experience. Nestled in Kerala's Western Ghats, Munnar stood out as the perfect escape from our hectic routines in Mysore. The lure of mist-covered tea plantations, serene lakes, and the charm of Kerala's hospitality pulled us toward this green paradise. It wasn't just another popular hill station; for us, Munnar represented a chance to disconnect from work and revel in nature's solitude. Plus, a honeymoon here felt like a precursor to our upcoming journey abroad, as we're both moving to Europe soon. We wanted our first shared adventure to be unforgettable, close to home, yet filled with exotic beauty.

Our Journey to Munnar

We planned a five-day itinerary, with our journey beginning early in Mysore. After a short bus ride to Bangalore, we took an overnight bus to Munnar, excited and well-prepared for a restful stay. The drive itself offered views of winding roads, vibrant green hills, and dotted tea estates, setting the mood for the coming days. The morning we arrived in Munnar, we were greeted by a cool breeze and mist, a refreshing change from Mysore's weather. The journey felt special, like the start of a new chapter in our lives.

Days 1-2: Checking into Our Hotel & Exploring Key Attractions

For the first two nights, we checked into a well-reviewed hotel overlooking a sprawling tea plantation. The view from our room was magical, with the mist rolling over the hills each morning. The hotel staff welcomed us with warm smiles and delicious traditional tea, making us feel right at home.

Our initial days were filled with visits to Munnar's popular landmarks. We spent hours walking through the lush Eravikulam National Park, spotting the Nilgiri tahr and marveling at the rare Neelakurinji flowers, which bloom only once in twelve years. Following that, we took a short hike to Anamudi Peak, the highest point in South India, for breathtaking views.

A highlight of these early days was our visit to the Munnar Tea Museum. We learned about the history and making of tea, an experience that resonated with us as tea lovers. We purchased several varieties of fresh tea, making sure we'd have a small part of Munnar back home.

Days 3-4: Transition to a Homestay & Discovering Local Culture

On the third day, we shifted to a homestay to immerse ourselves in Munnar's local life. This change felt rewarding as we experienced genuine Kerala hospitality in a cozy, rustic house surrounded by spice gardens. Our host family was warm and engaging, teaching us about local customs, spices, and cuisine. This stay allowed us to enjoy home-cooked meals, like appam with stew and spicy fish curry, a refreshing change from typical hotel food.

During our homestay, we ventured to Mattupetty Dam and Kundala Lake. Boating on the lake with the cool breeze was exhilarating, and the sight of mountain shadows on the calm water felt magical. We also visited Echo Point, where we had fun yelling our names and hearing them echo back, a simple but delightful experience that made us feel like kids again.

A Day of Shopping & Collecting Munnar Memories

One of our final days was reserved for shopping, as we wanted memorabilia to remind us of our Munnar honeymoon. We explored the Munnar Market, where we picked up tea varieties, coffee beans, handmade soaps, and aromatic spices like cardamom and cinnamon. We also bought some traditional Kerala handicrafts, including a miniature boat and hand-painted coasters.

The vendors were friendly and eager to share stories behind each product, which made the shopping experience even more enriching. These keepsakes will remind us of our trip as we start our new life in Europe.

Bidding Farewell to Munnar

Our departure from Munnar was bittersweet. We had spent five unforgettable days amidst nature, tasting local flavors, and making beautiful memories. The road back to Mysore felt like a quiet reflection of our time together. Munnar gifted us a honeymoon filled with both adventure and tranquility, a journey we'll carry with us as we step into the next phase of our lives.
